Thurston Rd 5-5-5, 12/10/18
December 10, 2018 - The Rochester Fire Department responded for a reported building fire around 8:30 this morning. First arriving members from Rochester Fire Fighters Local 1071 reported heavy smoke from a multi-story apartment building and began an interior attack. Additional resources were quickly requested and the fire eventually grew to a 5th alarm response, bringing nearly every on-duty Firefighter to the scene.
As the stubborn fire continued to burn throughout the building, the incident commander made the call to evacuate the structure and prepare for a defensive attack. During the evacuation, one Firefighter fell through the floor and a mayday was declared. He was removed from the structure and later seen walking to the ambulance under his own power. He reportedly suffered a minor back injury during the fall but is expected to be okay.
After several hours, the fire was still burning as parts of the building began to collapse due to instability. In addition to the injured Firefighter, one civilian also suffered non-life threatening injuries, and nine residents were reportedly displaced. Multiple County departments would be called in to cover city firehouses during this fire, and a demolition crew was eventually called in to raze the building.
