3 Alarm Fire - Rochester, NY 2/25/11
February 25, 2011 - Shortly after noon, City of Rochester firefighters responded for black smoke from a building in the area of Lyell Ave. and Sherman St. Rescue 11 was the first city company to call on location, reporting heavy smoke from a former AC Delco building and requesting a second alarm. The first arriving Chief quickly switched to a defensive attack upon hearing reports of heavy fire on the 3rd floor. Shortly after a 3rd alarm was requested, partly due to the terrible weather conditions. The temperature was around 30 degrees with heavy wind and snow, which helped intensify the fire. After more than 3 hours, the fire was declared under control and crews were allowed to reenter the structure to put out a few small spot fires that remained. The building has been the scene of previous fires (including a 7-alarm arson fire in June 2003 that destroyed most of the old complex), and the Rochester Fire Department has declared the cause of this latest blaze to be arson as well.
After several years of manpower reductions, this fire was the latest incident to stretch the RFD thin enough to require suburban companies to fill in at city firehouses, leaving their own districts partially unprotected.
