Sailboat Accident - Greece, NY 9/20/05
September 20, 2005 - Lake Shore firefighters were dispatched to a report of a sailboat that possibly struck a bridge on the Lake Ontario State Parkway at Greenleaf Rd. Crews arrived to find the boat did not hit the bridge, but was off it's rack. The driver was moving the boat from storage and realized he could not clear the low bridge. Upon hitting the brakes the driver was able to stop just before hitting the bridge, however the sailboat's momentum continued, tipping the rack forward and the boat slid off the rack and into the bed of the pickup truck. There were no injuries and no damage to the bridge but traffic was disrupted for several hours as both lanes of the Parkway had to be shut down until the boat could be removed. Using two heavy wreckers, a salvage crew was able to raise the boat high enough to reset the rack and place the boat back on it.
