Large Brush Fire - Greece, NY 4/12/11
April 12, 2011 - Firefighters from the Lake Shore Fire District responded for a radio alarm from a line officer reporting a brush fire along Edgemere Drive. The fire was in the marshes of Buck Pond and proved difficult to reach. Despite their best efforts, the fire continued to stay just ahead of the firefighters and eventually the decision was made to let it burn. Once it approached the eastern edge of the pond, crews worked to keep it from extending into the woods and the houses that lie just beyond on Long Pond Rd. It's estimated that well over 100 acres were burned and over 15 Fire Departments responded with equipment and manpower, either to the scene or to man empty firehouses. Companies remained on the scene well into the night to keep the fire in check, and were eventually blessed with a rain shower that helped finish the job. Several roads in the area were closed for hours due to smoke from the fire and the large amount of fire equipment responding to the area. A voluntary evacuation was enacted and residents wishing to leave their homes could take refuge at a local high school. Had this fire occurred one day prior the result could have been much worse as temperatures were in the 80's and sustained winds of 30-40 mph with gusts over 60 mph blanketed the area.
