Landing Zone Standby - Chili, NY 3/23/12
March 23, 2012 - At the request of the United States Marine Corps Reserve Center, Firefighters from the Greater Rochester International Airport Fire Department and Gates Fire District provided standby crews for a joint training operation between units of the New York Army National Guard and United States Marine Corps Reserve. Marines of 'A' Company, Anti-Terrorism Battalion, 4th Marine Division were bound for Fort Drum as part of their normal drill weekend, and enlisted the help of the NY Army National Guard in getting there. Three CH-47 Chinooks based at the Rochester Airport landed behind the US Marine Corps Reserve Center on Paul Road in Chili, NY and loaded the Marines aboard. For safety reasons, Rescue 3 and two Airport Firefighters, along with the crews of Engine 4563 and Squad 4567 from the Gates Fire District were on scene for the entire operation.
