Building Fire - Albion, NY 10/17/13
October 17, 2013 - Albion firefighters responded for the report of a building fire on West Ave. Firefighters arrived within minutes to discover the Orleans Pallet Company building fully involved. As many as 16 Fire Department's either responded to the scene or as fill in companies by late evening. The Orleans County Soil and Water department increased production to ensure adequate water supply, and companies also laid a large diameter supply line nearly 1/2-mile to the Erie Canal for drafting.
At the time of the fire, the building's owner and a worker were conducting a grinding operation on the second floor when it's believed a spark ignited the pallets stored inside. Within minutes, the second and third floors, along with the roof of the building, were engulfed in flames. Fire Command ordered an exterior attack from the beginning and focused on preventing extension to an adjacent building containing chemicals.
The fire was contained to the original building and no injuries were reported. Firefighters were expected to remain on scene at least overnight extinguishing hot spots and until a plan for demolition of the building was completed. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is considered accidental at this time.
